I've been trying to do this same thing for a few years, and Ubuntu and knoppix have definitely been helping in this respect. I've been talking up ubuntu pretty much since warty, and finally got a fully fledged multi boot system useable with edgy a month or two back.
Your approach with using win builds of linux apps was what i took as my last install of XP I vowed to only use OSS or otherwise free apps (no pirated photoshop here thanks, only GIMP!) and it's worked well.
until i broke edgy and couldn't fix it, so i'm trying SUSE 10.2 and from what i see so far, i like, but will probably go back to Ubuntu once feisty is out.
at any rate, the windows:linux boot ratio is slowly moving towards linux so that pesky vista upgrade will be a non-entity :)
