PC Repair System
The PC Repair System is another winners of the 32 MB USB drive contest. It was submitted by Decoy. Decoy wrote:
I was thinking a PC Repair/Toolkit would be nice. There are a variety of free and/or open-source tools for file recovery, anti-virus, anti-spyware, system info & system maint.
With a wide open description of the system, I was free to put in pretty much whatever I wanted to. There are 37 applications in total! A complete list can be found below.
Downloads Back Online!
Thanks to several generous DCoTers and a few file sharing sites, the downloads are back online. You will automatically be redirected to one of their websites when you donwload.
Download and Install
To get the PC Repair System system, simply download PCRepairSystem.zip and extract the contents to any USB drive 32 MB or greater. Remove the USB drive from your system and plug it back in. You’re off and running!
If you would like to help me conserve bandwidth, you can download the torrent file instead.
System Contents
There is a lot of work from different people that go into the applications in this system. In general, I just put the system together and make it work as one. This is a list of all the programs on the system, giving credit where credit is due.

Some time ago, I did a little write up on the DCoT PC Repair System. This pint-sized savior on a (USB) stick has been more than handy on occasion. you can even imagine. To start i recommend you to download PortableApps, lets say its like a suite of Portable Apps, it even has a launcher. So if you want to try these kind of software i recommend that for a start. Another pack you may want to try is PC Repair System, it will help you if you got problems with a PC, it has lots of recuperation tools. Still think this isnt worth?, in wikipedia theres a list of portable software, not all of them but a nice list indeed.

A bug was found in the PC Repair System that prevented the File Assassin program from running. I have repaired the problem and uploaded a new version of the download.
If you would like, you can repair the problem yourself. Simply go into the FileAssassin folder in the USB drive. Then rename FileASSASSINext.dll to FileASSASSIN.dll.
January 11th, 2007 at 8:38 am
Just a heads up, ERASER.DLL is missing from Eraser. You need to run the official installer and copy the DLL from C:\WINDOWS\system32 to the Eraser directory on your USB drive.
January 11th, 2007 at 8:55 am
That would explain why it worked on all my systems without any problems. I’m presently building a clean system and I hope to have this problem resolved later today.

It’s pretty cool to fit things on a USB drive. It’s even more cool when you can fit it in a 32M one. USB PC Repair System fits thirty seven applications onto a USB drive and all of them are open source to help fix or repair your PC. Windows only, but what are you waiting for? Interesting question. I guess the simple answer is “As long as you know what you are doing and use them safely.”
Just like the adage “Guns don’t kill people. People kill people.”, I guess we could say “Software doesn’t screw up computers. People screw up computers.”

I have 2 USB pens with problems, I cannot format them they might be “broken”! Is it possible to solve this?
January 17th, 2007 at 2:48 pm
When this is an issue, it is often because of either 1) physical damage or 2) they have been disabled using a physical locking mechanism. My advice? Throw them out and get a couple of new ones.

A couple of hints here…
1. Several of these apps are not truly “portable”. Granted they run fine off USB but they leave a mess of registry entries behind (usually under HKCU\Software hive) - and any settings you wish to change from defaults won’t migrate across different PC’s. To ensure that the computer is left in a clean state and save your settings on the USB key you need to package these apps - adding reg entries, running the app, then exporting & removing entries on exit. The simplest method I’ve found is RegRapper although it’s limited to checking a single key (http://portableapps.com/development/projects/registry_rapper).
Apps requiring this treatment (ie those that write to registry) - Eraser, Filemon, LSASecretsView, Process Explorer, ProduKey, Regmon, Rootkit Revealer, WirelessKeyView.
2. File size can be reduced, in some cases quite dramatically, by compressing EXE’s & DLL’s with UPX. http://upx.sourceforge.net or http://upxshell.sourceforge.net/. The 26Mb used by these apps came down to less than 17Mb following compression & “rapping” - thus leaving more space on your USB for other stuff.
I can confirm EJ’s comment regarding the need for eraser.dll off a full install.

This tracker’s announce path “announce” does not match the announce path “scrape” in the request.] The Tracker URL is http://tracker.bittorrent.com:6969/announce. I am using Azureus v2.5.0.4.
2) TIP: I found I can add divider lines in the DCoT menu by adding a program title line without the other 3 lines — Like this:

Definition of portable = doesn’t write to the registry, can run on any portable device and does not need admin rights to use

Just got this last night and LOVE it. I went through the tutorials on tweaking the menus and stuff and i added the SIW program and added to the menu. However, i am having one problem and can’t figure it out. When i plug in the drive i get the menu to come up fine. When i click on most of the programs from the taskbar DCoT menu they work fine (even the SIW i added myself). But for some reason I can’t get the CCCleaner program to launch this way. If i click on that from the menu i get the hourglass next to my mouse for a second and it looks like it is trying to launch but it won’t (i look through task manager and it is definately not running).
What’s weird is if i browse the drive and click on the CCCleaner exe from withing the CCCleaner folder it pops up no problem (both the main exe and the portable exe). But for the life of me i can’t get it to work from the nice little DCoT menu and can’t figure out why. It’s not a big deal, but it would be nice to figure out what i am missing. By the way, if it would help in troubleshooting this, i have tried this on 3 separate computers and all 3 do the same thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have a concern.
In trying to move the entire “PC Repair system” from one drive to another - it stops at uniextract/bin - innounp.exe seems to be at the root of the problem.
While I can delete innounp.exe (with the other files) in the /bin directory - a subsequent error while trying to copy stops on innounp.exe - even though it was deleted beforehand.
This occurs before running the systray app, and still occurs in safe mode.
The only thing I have not tried is a brute-force delete or deleting from a live-OS cd. I should not have to resort to this for seemingly legitimate and helpful software.
Please let me know if I’ve missed something.

With regards to 7-zip If you want to lose a ton of space then delete all the txt files in the Lang folder leaving only the language you use and the en.ttt or just en.ttt if you use English. This will save about 840K*. If you want to lose even more then use 7-Zip from the authors website and combine it with the Codecs and Formats folders along with 7z.exe, 7zG.exe, 7zFM.exe and 7-zip.dll from the PortableApps.com version overwriting as you go, delete the excess txt files in the root folder (you’ve still got them in the original zip after all) and you can have 7-Zip down to just 1.11MB in 38 files compared to 2.30MB* in 120 files from PortableApps.com and 2.89MB in 106 files from the author.
Hope this helps all of you out there who are experimenting with small drives, it’s amazing what you can fit onto 32MB when you put your mind to it!
* = Actually 762K and 2.08MB respectively but they take up the quoted amount of file space.

Nod32 turned up a “malware threat” at the tail end of a pcrepairsystem.zip download, in prodkey (prodkey106?). I do not think this is a false positive, inasmuch as I already have prodkey, which was scanned by nod32 uneventfully.

You have a great little product here, I haven’t read all the comments, there isn’t time, but I was wondering if you have thought about packaging the image on your device and replicating it with, perhaps, a manual on how to use the different apps?
Also, I figured it might be better to have the whole shebang on a bootable CD/DVD so they can’t be infected by malware.

I down loaded the zip and extracted it directly to my USB thumbdrive (U3 Smart Drive). But when I try to click on the DCoTMenu.exe I get the following error.
[AutoIt Error]
Line 0 (File “F:\DCoTMenu.exe”):
Run($Executable,$WorkingDirectory)
Error: Unable to execute the external program.
The system cannot find the file specified.
I have read the comments about possibly a spelling error in one of the programs folders but have checked and cannot seem to find it.
Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks.

Nice collection.
I wanted to suggest another app. It’s called Belarc advisor and it’s a nice way to audit or take inventory of a computer. I use it often before I start working on a customer’s pc so that I have a record of all licenses, software, and hardware configuration before I start. It outputs to an .html file that you can then print or save as needed. It does however require installation on the host.
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
Another pc audit program that CAN run from usb is SIW - System Information for Windows found here: http://www.gtopala.com/
